Road safety is a concern for all citizens in Europe and finding solutions to save lives on the European roads is of interest to all Europeans. ASECAP is the third co-chair of the eSafety forum. The project is a joint industry-public sector initiative driven by the European Commission, ASECAP co-chairs the project with ERTICO, ITS Europe and ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers' Association).

The aim of the project is to promote the development, deployment and use of Integrated Road Safety Systems to enhance road safety throughout Europe. Sustainable solutions can only be created together with all stakeholders at European level.

The role of ASECAP

ASECAP as co-Chair of the Project will assist the EC on the management of the Project contributing to its guidance and an increasing cooperation with the automobile sector to facilitate the establishment of conditions for a faster deployment of cooperative systems to improve safety and the impact of road mobility on environment.

ASECAP co-chairs the Intelligent Infrastructure Working Group (IIWG), one of the 16 eSafety Working Groups. The IIWG was established in 2008. It focuses on infrastructure-to-vehicle cooperative systems, clarifying what is an Intelligent Infrastructure and which are their components to support the foreseen services of cooperative systems. The identification of the services to be supported will be a first step to confirm the required/necessary communication networks to support them, as well as the required architecture(s) able to give support to an easily upgradable and flexible construction all these services. These solutions shall be defined in close cooperation with all involved parties from the European Commission, Member States and other stakeholders.

ASECAP Vision

ASECAP aims: “To assure at the motorway and bridge tolled concessions that users have a safe and rest driving in an adequate timely travel without stress or congestions and so under sustainable conditions.”

This is fully aligned with the actual vision of eSafety when it refers to a safe, smart and clean mobility with no accidents, no delays and no negative impact on environment.

ASECAP also aims that the final solution on cooperative systems may be one that takes into consideration the needs and interests of motorway operators namely potentiating the development of value added services that will also allow the improvement of a closer and long lasting relationship with their users.

16 Working Groups are focusing on domain-specific priority areas that are important for the implementation of the eSafety Working Group recommendations, and in line with the actions brought forward in the Commission Communication.

In the last eSafety Forum meeting that took place in the Borschette Centre on 29 October a new vision, mission, strategy and organization for the eSafety Forum were presented and adopted.

The Vision is of a safe, smart and clean mobility with:

    • zero accidents,
    • zero delays,
    • no negative impact on environment and
    • connected and informed citizens

where products and services are affordable and seamless, privacy is respected and security is provided.
